clever...

Wow. Talk about taking a simple idea and seeing through to the bitter end. It was entertaining. Cool even. Had kind of a Moby rawness to it if you know what I mean. Wait a minute. Blast, it's stuck in my head. Good drum programming, if not somewhat predictable. Very tired and worn out drum sounds, but hey, you go with what you got. In retrospect, I think it would have been good to add some other XP default sounds. I dunno. Good job.

SHADOWFOX2 responds:

...if you could find ANY sounds that would go well with this song, then by all means let me know, 'cause I just don't know which ones. Umm, Moby rawness? What's that? So you're saying that my music sounds like raw fish? Man, there's a lot of stuff in this review I don't understand...retrospect? HUH? OK, I'm lost, but thanks for the 7!

Quite good...

My first reaction to this song is that it sounds like there's something missing. It sounds like the background to a Stevie Wonder song, but we're missing the melody. There's no hook, no memorable, whistleable riff or melody.

I know how annoying it can get when you are compared to other artists, so I'm sorry. The horns sound ALMOST real. Excellent dynamic enveloping. I could use more drums. What did you use for the drums, especially the snare drum sound?
Overall, the mix sounds kind of choppy and computerized. I know. Techno musicians have it easy. It's supposed to sound computery.

Also the horn arrangement. Too many octaves. Throw in some thirds and sixths here and there.

I've heard much worse than this, but I'd never listen to it because it doesn't move me at all. I know you can do it though. This was a good excercise in mixing/recording. 3/5. Keep it coming.

Hmmmm......

Yeah I don't think this is jazz, but I'm not going to let that affect my review.

Some really great things happening here. Good soloing. You can play the guitar alright. I like the background. Nice drum programming, not too static, varies nicely. Within the loop that is. Now, the loop itself wears on me after about 6-8 repetitions. A "B" section would do wonders for this song. Also, and this is just my opinion, but I thing the guitar is way to fuzzy and artificial sounding.
It's getting so that it almost sounds like a synth rather than an axe. Here's what I would do:

Back off the bells or whatever it is you have on the chords in the foreground. Clean up the guitar, put a little reverb on it, maybe about 20%. How 'bout a cross delay on the guitar, so that when you play it, you hear a left echo, right echo, etc. That would make this sound much more 3D. Please review my latest submission as it has been buried!

mhb responds:

thank you for the insight. i'm surprised that ya think it almost sounds like a synth. i've never heard of a synth capable of makin' that sound. and i'm gonna check your newest track right now. thanks again!

Some tips...

Not bad. You definitely could use an overall noise reduction. Also, and this is my biggest broblem. You definitely NEED the lead vocals panned in the center. In fact, If you had the lead vocals panned in the center, it would make this 99% better. It sounds like you used a tiny little microphone in a bathroom or a garage for reverb... which is incidentally a Really good technique considering what you had to work with. I'm guessing that the guitar is the only actual instument being played? Not bad, but the solo also needs to be more central in the mix. Maybe not in the center, I'd put it at about 33% right. It should be more in the center as well.

So to sum it up, overall excellent musicianship. Good singing, good playing, good everything. Except the mix. Hmm. Now that I listen again, it sound like maybe the piano is real too? I just might download and remaster this.

Good Job

JethrotheOMB responds:

Yeah, I haven't really gotten good at recording yet. The reverb is actually digital. My recording program comes with quite a few effects. Yes, the guitar is the only real instrument... The piano is from the keyboard I used to do the bass. If you actually end up remastering it, let me know. From what I've heard from your submissions, you know what you're doing. :)
Thanks for the review. Cheers!

Welll........

Definitely some good things happening here. I liked the overall structure. I Liked the melodies and piano pattern. However, it sounds like this is a Finale playback, am I right? If i'm wrong then I'm an idiot, oh well. If I was reviewing the material only, then I'd give this a ten. However, you need to find a better way of producing your work so that it sounds less........like a Finale playback. Oh and if you have control over it, put some kind of different reverb on that snare drum. That slapback was driving me crazy.

Rythim-Man responds:

-.- yea well I pressed saved as audio but it still sounds like a finale playback. I could have changed the reverbs but I decided to keep it this way for this song. I'm not entirely sure why, I think to make it more clear I was willing to let it sound artificial.

I was trying to keep it light, fun, and simple. That might not have been a good idea, but that's what I wanted. I might do it again with better reverb and stereo only to be criticized for putting it up twice.

Slapback? If you are refering to that loud snare, then that's my favorite percussion sound! Ya, but come to think of it, I've heard it sound better.

I'll remember this, thanks. Keep on keepin' on!

awww........

Perfect for game overs. It makes me feel like a failure. I like it. What keyboard do you have?

No1r responds:

Thanks but you're not really a failure :) I used a Yamaha PSR-175 interfaced via midi with Fruity Loops :)

It's alright......

Performance, balance and mixing were all nice. The overall sound is quite good. I would never listen to this song though for one reason: It has no hook. No unique melody or funky riff or rhythm that sticks in my mind and makes me want to listen again. Again good mixing though. This would be great as background music in a James Bond FPS. Or porn. Lol. Btw thanx for the review of my "super mario 3 jazz".

No1r responds:

Yup, well, thanks for your critic :) You're simply right, this song has no "hook" and no unique melody or riffs..I tried to do something "alternative" but i still have to learn a lot in thiz way..i hope you liked the solo at least :) Thanks again!

Just a question...

Excellent work, no doubt. What keyboard do you use?

MilkMan-Dan responds:

Yamaha DGX-305 :)

Has promise...

Are those sampled horns? If so from where?

All the cutting out of the horns made it sound glitchy. I understand this can be used to good effect, but I think you could do better.
In my opinion it could use a separate bassline.
Interesting drum programming though.

BeatAssassin responds:

You know what... I made this ages ago, and the other day I was just trying to rememer if I made the melody to this, I think i did, but if not the loop was from Soundtrack

thanks for the reviews - yea it does sound a lil glitchy

Interesting but...

It has some balance issues, like the lead violin being a bit too loud.
What did you use to make this?

Interesting simulacra.

Drums could be a bit fuller...too simplistic.

All matters of taste and opinion. Good job! Keep it coming!

BeatAssassin responds:

All of this is loops, unlike the "Mighty" beat, even the drum is a loop, I just cut it up so it sounds like a Dance track,

I used Soundtrack to make ALL of this track, And I agree the lead violin is too loud in comparison with all of the other instruments... the next track i make will contain NO loops at all.
cheers for the review
